Overview
When the original Piper Aircraft Corporation first conceived a new trainer in the mid-1970s, the company polled CFIs to determine what traits this aeroplane should have. The Tomahawk delivers what these special customers ordered: an aeroplane that provides an honest response to pilot inputs, a comfortable cabin with great visibility, and big aeroplane-style handling. The cockpit layout is geared for safety, with the fuel selector front and centre on the console.
Our flight instructors feel strongly that the Tomahawk does what Piper intended. "The student is well trained, and they can't get away with some of the things they can in other trainers.” The larger feel to the aircraft means the conversion between the PA-38 and the more common PA-28 is very subtle.
This specific 1979 Piper Tomahawk has spent much of its time, doing as designed, flying for flight schools. Notably Ravanair, Liverpool and more recently Eden Flight Training at Teesside. Since then the aircraft has been rebuilt by Fox Aircraft Engineering and has maintained its position on the Flying Fox fleet for some 4 years.
Unlike others on the fleet, this particular Tomahawk is equipped with a Garmin GNS 430 GNS all-in-one GPS/Nav/Comm solution. It features a TSO-certified GPS, 2280-channel capacity comm and 200-channel ILS/VOR with localizer and glideslope. Allowing hourbui9lder to further their basic instrument knowledge and navigate with more commercial techniques. The unit is fitted alongside its complimentary OBS instrument allowing: VOR/ILS tracking. The GNS 430's 4-inch high-contrast display with brilliant colours makes it easy to read and interpret pilot-critical information. Effective use of colour makes it easy to see your position relative to ground features, chart data, navaids, flight plan routings, approach procedures and more.
Small, compact, and cheap to run. This economical Piper Tomahawk is perfect for an hour builder looking to consolidate the skill whilst travelling the continent. People mock the six-pack instrument cluster, in the modern age but it is the only true way to develop proper situational awareness, which you can support with a honed instrument scan cycle. The instruments along with the rest of the aircraft do as they say on the tin. No matter whether you’re crossing Land or Water, Day or Night, this aircraft will get you to your destination.
